Recent 500 West Hotel Review: "[The following review is from my experience spending a night with a friend in a two bed room with shared bathrooms (8 per floor).] Look: are you going to San Diego to (1) sit around in your hotel room, or (2) are you going to get out, see the cultural attractions, and partyr If (2) is your choice, and all you need is a clean bed for the night and a  clean bathroom to shower in, go to 500 West. If you're a prissy pain in the (censored), go elsewhere. Here's what it boils down to: the Gaslamp is walking distance, as was the concert venue (4th and B) that I went to for a rock show. Balboa Park is but a brief taxi ride away as well. For such a prime location, the cost was probably a quarter of what you'd pay for other hotels in the area. So you don't have a private bathroom -- to me that was no big deal. The shared bathrooms are clean and only person goes in at a time. It's not like you're taking a community shower and other people's suds and filth are running in your drain! The rooms are small, but again, they are perfect for people who actually plan on going out and about and only need the room for sleeping. Overall, I thought the value I got at 500 West was a steal. Definitely recommended for cool people. And even semi-squares."
