Recent California Suites Hotel Review: "We spent 5 nights here with our two children and had a terrific experience! Based on the price we were somewhat leary about what to expect. We were visiting family and didn't want to spend a lot on our stay. The hotel exceeded our expectations in every way (although I think "motel" might better describe the bulidings than "hotel"). The grounds are beautifully kept and while the room decor was a bit outdated, it was spotless. Our room even came with a kitchenette (fridge and stove top). The free, continental breakfast was an added plus. Coffee, tea, juice, cereal (the typical sugar-coated kind as well as "healthier" options like bran cereal), a variety of bagels, bread (both white and whole wheat), cream cheese, etc., were available as well as fresh fruit (during our stay this consisted of bananas and oranges). There are a good variety of restaurants within walking distance. The pool and hottub where cleaned each morning and were both heated. Another plus, as our kids spent a great deal of time there. The staff could not have been more amenable or polite (especially the manager) - whether it be our request for extra pillows/towels, or directions to sights/restaurants. As far as the location is concerned, while it was far enough from route 805 to provide a quiet setting, the hotel was close enough so that we could get into downtown San Diego in less than 10 minutes. My husband and I have traveled extensively around the world and likened the hotel to an upscale European hostel as there seemed to be quite a variety of guests from various backgrounds: families (many from different countries), college-aged kids, older adults and single people. What a fantastic value for the price - I can understand why this hotel has been so highly rated by previous guests. We will absolutely come back when we visit family again next year!"
