Recent Ramada Gaslamp Convention Historic Review: "The Ramada Gaslamp in the historic St James hotel was great. The staff was outstanding. The hotel was nicely decorated retaining some of historic charm of the era the hotel was built. The elevators were original and although a little small, they were as fast as any other elevator. The rooms are small with comfortable beds and free HBO. Bottled water is available in the room at a very reasonable cost. The view from the roof is amazing and a must-see. Computers available for use on the second floor with WIFI throughout and internet cable (cat 5) connection (cat 5) available on the landing just above the lobby. Hotel is close to anywhere you want to go in the Gaslamp district. The Horton Plaza shopping mall is 3 blocks away. Clubs and bars on most corners and plenty of night life available. SeaWorld, the Zoo, Balboa Park and Seaport Village all within 10 minutes drive. Overall it was a great hotel.
The restaurant/bar next door called Briana€™s Bar and Grille was a nice surprise. Great service, good/plentiful food at a reasonable price and you dona€™t have to drive to get there.
The only complaint I had was the valet parking. The cost was $20.00 per night which is reasonable considering the price of the room. The problem I had was that during the two nights (Thursday and Friday) that I stayed there, the parking was terrible. It seemed that valet was understaffed because there were always cars parked in the 3 white curb spaces in front of the hotel. This required circling the block to see if a spot opened up in front of the hotel. This was not so bad on Thursday, but Friday when all the clubs were overflowing and the streets were packed with cars it took 20 minutes to circle the block.
If you stay at the Ramada Gaslamp, when you check in, ask the clerk what you should do if you cannot find a place to drop off your car for valet to park. It will save you a lot of time and aggravation later."

The restaurant's carved mahogany bar once belonged to Joan Crawford and bears the scuff marks made by Joan's stilettos when she danced atop the bar.
